Top Cars for Teens

Submitted by CarClearance.com Staff on June 27, 2013 - 3:37pm

If you are shopping for a new or used car for your new driver this summer you might want to check out this list of the “best cars for teens” from CarInsurance.com.  They compared cars across several categories and also compared the cost to insure an 18 year old driver on his or her own policy to come up with the top 14 vehicles recommended.

To choose the list, CarInsurance.com started with vehicles selected as “Top Safety Picks” by the IIHS. This designation identifies the 2009-model cars that withstood crash tests with flying colors and also those that have available electronic stability control improve handling and reduce accidents. Out of nearly 100 top-scoring models pickups and SUVs were eliminated due to their higher centers of gravity, making them easier to rollover.

Next they looked for models that cost less than $15,000 from a private party, using Edmunds.com’s True Market Values and selected vehicles with 20 MPG or better combined EPA ratings. Vehicles with higher-than-average reported yearly repair visits were removed from the list and finally a sample insurance policy was priced out for comparison purposes.

The rates that were compared are for an 18-year-old male in Florida with no tickets or accidents, buying his own full-coverage policy with $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury liability, $50,000 property damage liability, and $10,000 personal injury coverage along with comprehensive and collision coverage and a $500 deductible. Actual rates would mostly be determined by ZIP code and driving histories.
