Modernized exterior styling; efficient turbo engine; available all-wheel drive; impressive cargo capacity; competitive pricing
The Buick Regal Sportback comes in four trim levels; base, Preferred, Preferred II and Essence. The TourX wagon comes in base, Preferred and Essence trims. Standard features in the base trims include start/stop engine technology, rearview camera, LED taillights, outside heated power-adjustable mirrors, 4G LTE with built in WiFi hotspot, a 7-inch touchscreen-based infotainment system and 17-inch aluminum wheels.
The Preferred adds power seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Preferred II upgrades a split-folding rear seat, 18" aluminum wheels, fog lamps, a heated steering wheel and an upgraded the infotainment system. Essence Regals add heated leather seats.
The TourX only comes with the 2.0L turbo engine and all-wheel drive combination. It features an impressive 33 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 74 cubic feet by folding the rear seatbacks down.
All trims save the GS receive a 2.0L turbo inline 4-cylinder engine producing 250 horsepower and 260 lb-feet of torque. When equipped with optional all-wheel drive, torque output is pushed up to 295 lb-feet and the transmission becomes an 8-speed automatic.
The Buick Regal GS comes with a 3.6L direct-injected V6 and in all-wheel drive only. This combination produces 310 horsepower and 282 lb-feet of torque mated with a GS-specific 9-speed automatic transmission. The GS also includes driver-adjustable suspension, Brembo performance brakes and 19" wheels. The audio system features an 8-inch display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and active noise cancellation.
Safety features across the lineup include park assist, Blind Zone Alert, Cross-Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. Air bags include dual-stage front, side-impact, knee and curtain side-impact and Teen Driver Safety Mode.
The Buick Regal is aimed directly at luxury sedans from European manufacturers like Audi and BMW. In pursuit of this goal, the Buick Regal offers a smooth quiet ride, a powerful 2.0L turbo engine and more rear legroom then its rivals with an astounding 60 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded down.
With the Buick Regal Sportback starting at around $25,000 for a base model going up to $35,270 for the top of the line Avenir model, it easily undercuts its main competition in the Kia Stinger, which starts around $33,000, as well as the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A5 Sportback, which both start at well over $40,000.
After a redesign two years ago, the Regal returns for 2020 with no significant changes this year.
